Problem Solving Strategies
In our third grade math group this week, students worked on using “create a table” as one strategy to problem solve and organize data. This is not an easy concept. We spent time working on some together before they were sent to work with their partner. Each team was asked to wrestle with and make sense of a given problem. Even students who were confident in their answer or could determine the answer in their head had to determine how to set up the table, decide what went into the table (what the variables would be), and how they would be labeled. Students were also asked to think about their thinking and explain the process which they went through to understand the problem. Our goal for students is to form a deeper understanding of the concepts and find patterns as opposed to simply following mathematical procedures.
